THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

56

HOMILY OF SATURDAY OF THE 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Saints Charles Lwanga and his Companions, Martyrs

Saints Charles Lwanga and his Companions, Martyrs of Uganda, were young men who faced immense persecution for their Catholic faith. Despite brutal torture and execution, they remained steadfast, refusing to renounce their beliefs. Their unwavering commitment to God and their bravery in the face of adversity continue to inspire and serve as a testament to the power of faith and the resilience of the human spirit.

Ecclesiasticus 51:17-27, Mark 11:27-33

THEME: THE WISDOM OF THE WISE

Our today’s first reading is in praise of divine wisdom. We may be smart or tricky, we may have slippery way of escape from reality, if we do not subscribe to divine wisdom, we will wane our energy level with endless gabbles with life.

Jesus demonstrated in the gospel that he is wisdom personified. The way he handled the chief priests and the scribes and the elders in today’s gospel showed that true wisdom is from above. He came from the Father to live among us.

These religious leaders confronted Jesus and questioned the authority behind his actions. He responded by asking them about the origin of John the Baptist’s baptism, whether it was from heaven or from man. Because of the fear of the people’s opinion, they refused to answer. Consequently, Jesus declined to reveal his own authority to them, leaving the matter unresolved.

They wanted to convict him, but he left them more confused by saying, “We don’t know.” His wisdom brought their ignorance to light.

Wisdom is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, let us pray that we may be an embodiment of divine wisdom, so as not to fall into errors. Amen.
