HOMILY OF SATURDAY OF THE 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist.
Isaiah 49:1-6, Acts 13:22-26, Luke 1:57-66,80
THEME: THE JOHN
The name John means God’s gift or the graciousness of God. Each of us is a special gift from God to the world. John was born for a unique purpose of heralding the coming of the saviour Jesus Christ. Likewise, each of us is a gift, born for a specific purpose.
Our birthday should extend beyond the act of cutting an extravagant cake and instead prompt us to engage in profound introspection about the purpose of our existence.
We all have a purpose in God’s mission on earth, despite the varying roles and worldly evaluations. David was chosen by God, but he wasn’t the Saviour. The Saviour was to come through his dynasty. John the Baptist was sent by God to prepare the way for the Saviour, even though some mistook him for the Saviour himself. In the end, John humbly acknowledged his unworthiness before the true Saviour.
It is important to avoid usurping others’ roles and overshadowing their successes. Instead, we should embrace our individual callings, lest we fade away unnoticed in obscurity.
May God’s gracious designs for us come to fruition, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
