OUR LIVES AS THE TESTIMONIES OF THE LAW, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua, CSSp

78

HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK IN LENT

Deuteronomy 4:1,5-9, Matthew 5:17-19

THEME: OUR LIVES ARE TESTIMONIES OF THE LAW

QUOTE: “The greatest of all testimonies is that of a life well lived”

God’s laws are meant to shape our lives.  They are not a set of religious rules which show how holy we are. They are not a set of regulations which maintain order in the church or preserve the conduct of a religious system.  Any religion that does not produce fruit through the good life its members live, is not worthy of the name.

Moses addressed the people in the first reading,

“See, as the Lord my God has commanded me, I teach you the laws and customs that you are to observe in the land you are to enter and make your own. Keep them, observe them, and they will demonstrate to the peoples your wisdom and understanding. When they come to know of all these laws they will exclaim, “No other people is as wise and prudent as this great nation.” And indeed, what great nation is there that has its gods so near as the Lord our God is to us whenever we call to him? And what great nation is there that has laws and customs to match this whole Law that I put before you today?”

The greatest of all testimonies is that of a life well lived. Wherever we go, our lives should produce positive reactions from people around us. This gives us the confidence to share our values without any fear of rejection, because our admirers ought to be attracted to learn our lifestyle.

Jesus made it clear in the gospel,

“Therefore, the man who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be considered the least in the kingdom of heaven; but the man who keeps them and teaches them will be considered great in the kingdom of heaven.”

Let us not be too quick to preach the word of God, but since we must preach it, we must make serious efforts to practice it to set good examples to others.

May our lives demonstrate the power of the word we preach and may our preaching build our lifestyle, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
