Homily of Monday of the 26th week in ordinary Time
Job 1:6-22, Luke 9:46-50
“An argument started between the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus knew what thoughts were going through their minds, and he took a little child and set him by his side and then said to them, ‘Anyone who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For the least among you all, that is the one who is great.” Luke 9:46-50. Jesus teaches that true greatness is found in humble service to others.“
The quest to be at the top should be an urge to be at a privilege position where we can be able to serve others. Position of power and authority supposed to be used for the good and safety of those who are vulnerable or fragile in our society. When the disciples were arguing over which is the greatest, Jesus set before them children. Children are dependent. They cannot take care of themselves in many ways. They need the help of adults.
Hence, every leader must count himself or herself as a servant called to support those put under their care. The carers are at the service of the cared for. Hence, the Lord said, “the least among you all, that is the one who is great.” They are the greatest because they need more attention. Same applies in business parlance, “Customers are the masters” They have come to get services which they cannot provide for themselves. Their ignorance or vulnerability must not be used against them. They deserved special care. They are like patients in the hands of doctors.
We pray that we always use our positions to better the lives of others. May those under us always enjoy the dividend of dutiful service. Amen.
