Unity is a Divine Principle

HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF SEVENTH WEEK OF EASTER YEAR C
(MEMORIAL OF ST BONIFACE BISHOP AND MARTYR),

One of the greatest weapon to defeat an opponent during war, is to cause division in the camp of the opponent. If this is done, then victory is very sure. On the other hand, unity is also the greatest weapon of conquest. In our world today, there are so much division among people and wicked people capitalises on this to exploit others. Even among Christians, the level of disunity is very deep, that is why people confuses religion for spirituality.

Unity is one of the mark by which we could know a true Church. The Unity of faith has been one thing that have kept the Church alive from centuries up till today. In the human society, lack of unity causes lots of damaging effect. Today in the gospel, Jesus prayed for the unity of His Apostles. He prayed that they may be one just as Him and the Father are one (John 17:20-26).

Jesus knew that without Unity, the Church will not stand and that the message of salvation that He has brought will be extinct. Therefore, He prayed against division amongst His followers. Unity is divine as it marks the presence of the Lord. Division weakens our faith and causes confusion amongst us.

Jesus prayed that the disciples may be one because He knew the danger of disunity and the damage it will cause amongst us. We must avoid those things that contribute to disunity among Christians such as calumny, dissension, insincerity, gossip, selfishness, pride, arrogance, self-centredness, selfish ambition, discrimination, tribalism, nepotism, and favouritism.

These must not be found among us if we want to remain one in Christ. We ought to do everything possible to keep the flag of unity flying among us. By this, all may know that we are the disciples of Jesus. Peace be with you.
