Homily of Wednesday in the 23rd Week of the Ordinary Time Year C.

Dear friends,
As we reflect on the Beatitudes in today’s gospel text, we might initially think Jesus is glorifying poverty and condemning riches. However, understanding the context reveals a deeper message. Jesus speaks to a large crowd, emphasizing the reversal of fortunes between the rich and the poor. He’s not condemning wealth outright but highlighting its dangers and temptations.
The poor, humble, hungry, and persecuted are blessed because they are poor in spirit, humble, and dependent on God. They recognize their need for Him and acknowledge the temporary nature of earthly struggles, trusting in the eternal joy that awaits those who follow Christ.
These blessed individuals are like those described in Psalm 1:1 – they don’t follow the wicked, tread the path of sinners, or sit with scoffers. Instead, they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.
Let us recognize the importance of inner spiritual wealth over material possessions. The kingdom of God operates differently from the world’s system, exalting the poor and humble while bringing the self-sufficient and arrogant low. Earthly struggles are temporary, but the rewards of following Christ are eternal.
May we prioritize spiritual wealth and follow Christ faithfully. Amen.
Peace be with you!
