HOMILY OF SATURDAY OF THE 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

The Immaculate Heart of Mary

2 Corinthians 5:14-21, Luke 2:41-51

THEME: THE WOMAN WITH A LARGE HEART

Yesterday we celebrated the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Today comes the memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Just as Simeon told Mary in the temple at the presentation of Jesus, “a sword will pierce your heart” Mary experienced a lot of shocks because of the favour she received from God as the designated mother of the Saviour. The loss of Jesus in the temple as recorded in today’s gospel is one of the sorrows she experienced. The response of Jesus when he was found was enough to add to her tension. Jesus asked her, “Why were you looking for me?’ he replied. ‘Did you not know that I must be busy with my Father’s affairs?

Despite all that she experienced because of her delicate roles in tending the Saviour, she did not refrain from doing God’s will. She kept accompanying the Lord in his missionary journey till the end. This earned her the title, “Our lady of Sorrow, Queen of Peace.” She didn’t play down the message of the angel concerning her, and her son and she didn’t take for granted the prophecy of Simeon at the temple. She learnt only to ponder.

When we lead a live of openness to God, he will make us worthy of his promises and grant us all the necessary recipes for the actualization of his will for us.

We pray for the kind of heart that receives and retains God’s vison for our lives. Let’s pray for a heart like that of Mary, that amidst our life challenges, we can still hold ourselves firm in following the path the Lord has traced for us. Amen.
