HOMILY OF FRIDAY OF THE THIRTY FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C.
7TH NOVEMBER 2025.
BY REV FR. ADOLE ACHILLEUS ILE LAMPEZ CSSp.
1st reading : Romans 15:14-21
Psalm 97:1-4
Gospel : Luke 16:1-8
According to the gospel reading of today, “…the steward said to himself, “Now that my master is taking the stewardship from me, what am I to do? Dig? I am not strong enough. Go begging? I should be too ashamed. Ah, I know what I will do to make sure that when I am dismissed from office there will be some to welcome me into their homes.” After this thought, the steward continued in his error and presented yet a dishonest statement of account to his master.
There is a common saying that two wrongs cannot make a right. This steward was dismissed from office because of his dishonesty and even when he had the last chance to be truthful, he preferred to be persistent in his dishonesty.
Now think about this, when he was dismissed, he showed no sign of remorse nor regret. What if the request for the statement of account by his master was a way of giving him one more chance to be truthful?
Do you not think that the master could have forgiven him, if he had asked for mercy instead of manipulating the account to gain enterance into the homes of those who once owed his master? Do you think these people would actually allow a dishonest person who served his master in a dishonest way into their homes? I don’t think anybody would want to associate with someone who is dishonest and cannot be trusted. This is exactly why two wrongs can never make a write.
Just like this steward, as a result of our pride, and shame, some of us often find ourselves in situations that we battle between correcting an error with what is right or correcting an error with another one.
Today, we must learn that once we are in error, what we must seek for is “the right” because no error truly corrects another, and no lie eventually turns true, it could only hide the truth for sometime. Let truthfulness prevail in our day to day relationship with God and our neighbours.
Peace be with you
