Homily of the 4th Sunday of advent 22nd December 2024
Micah 5:1-4, Hebrews 10:5-10, Luke 1:39-45

There is power is consent. It requires discretion to give consent to ideas or any form of proposal presented to us, regardless of how they are framed, because what we agree to can significantly impact on our lives. However, in our relationship to God, every yes we give to his call is a gateway to our eternal destiny.

No matter what we do, God’s supreme love and his eternal designs cannot be changed. In every generation, he wants people who will make themselves worthy of his promises to humanity. Many a time, we play down on ourselves, thinking that God cannot make use of us. We underrate God’s power, forgetting that the maker of all things has the power and authority to do whatever he wills. Though the fulfilment of God’s promises may tarry because of our reluctance in keeping to their terms, whatever he said he will do, he will surely do.

The promise of the Messiah has been foretold long ago, but he did not come until there was a woman prepared or ready to for his coming. A simple yes to God’s can change a lot of circumstances in our lives and our community at large. Every yes, we make to God is a plus to the rest of humanity, because God’s focus is towards all that he has made. He simply uses us as channels of his work in the world.

The moment Elizabeth heard the voice of Mary, during her visit, Elizabeth exclaimed, “Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

By her simple yes to message of an angel, the young lady in the small village of Bethlehem has now become the mother of the Lord. This is not only the Lord of Elizabeth, but also the Lord of the Universe. Moreover, every decision we make in life becomes a part of our identity.

Let’s pray that all we do will always align with God’s plan for us. Amen.
