HOMILY OF TUESDAY IN THE 20TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Judges 6:11-24, Matthew 19:23-30

THEME: THE LORD IS PEACE

When we are generous with the little we have, God will open us to greater things in our lives. Our victory is not in our own strength, but in the power of the Lord. Our little is great in God’s hands.

in today’s first reading, Gideon was lamenting the threat his nation gets from the Midian,

“At this the Lord turned to him and said, go in the strength now upholding you, and you will rescue Israel from the power of Midian. Do I not send you myself?’ Gideon answered him, ‘Forgive me, my lord, but how can I deliver Israel? My clan, you must know, is the weakest in Manasseh and I am the least important in my family.’ The Lord answered him, ‘I will be with you, and you shall crush Midian as though it were a single man.”

To be assured that it was the Lord who was speaking to him, Gideon brought an offering before the angel. When he realized that it was really an angel of the Lord, he  greatly rejoiced and broke into joy because he knew that God’s hands were now upon him. He was then confident to step into victory. His offering ushered him into a divine assurance which would later boost his courage with which he would deliver his people.

Moreover, peace is the major evidence of divine encounters. Anytime, peace eludes us, let us offer something to God, he will surely make himself manifest and his peaceful calm will fill us. When Gideon knew this was the angel of the Lord, he said, ‘Alas, my Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!’ The Lord answered him, ‘Peace be with you; have no fear; you will not die.’ Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it The-Lord-is-Peace.”

At God’s own time, every high mountain in our life that prevent us from reaching our peace, will be brought low. Amen.
