Homily of the 4th January Saturday: Christmastide, By Fr. Williams Onyilo CSSp, I John 3:7-10, John 1:35-42
A good mirror offers a clear and accurate reflection of who we are—not only to ourselves but also to those around us who observe it. It does not distort or present a false image. Most people spend time gazing into a mirror to truly understand their appearance; they don’t merely glance at it and walk away.
In today’s Gospel, we encounter a similar scenario. Some people look at others as if they are mirrors, interpreting and expressing what they see. For example, John the Baptist recognises Jesus as “the Lamb of God,” and Jesus sees Simon as “the rock.” These reflections turned out to be true by the end of their earthly lives, just as a reliable mirror reveals an authentic image.
A good mirror does not deceive, and neither should we be deceived by false impressions. The first reading warns us against being misled by the words of insincere friends, those who act as “fake mirrors.” Such individuals distort the truth and can lead us astray.
Beloved in Christ, I pray that God surrounds us this year with genuine friends—friends who reflect to us the truth of who we are and what we represent in the world. May their honesty help us make meaningful and healthy adjustments in our lives. Amen.
