HOMILY OF TUESDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF EASTER.
St Mark the Evangelist
1 Peter 5:5-14, Mark 16:15-20
THEME: THE BENEFITS OF OUR BELIEF IN CHRIST
Before Jesus was taken to heaven, he commissioned the apostles to go into the world and proclaim the gospel of salvation, and he said,
“These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils; they will have the gift of tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they will lay their hands on the sick, who will recover.”
Our belief in Christ gives us power to contend and subdue the forces of darkness around us. We are meant to bring healing to people, and not meant to add to their burden. Peter in the first reading admonishes us to stand up in faith against the wiles of the devil and that we must not give up in the faces of trials.
Above all, we must soak ourselves in the power of God. Our unbelief will be evident in our responses to trials. Faith helps us fix our gaze on God, who has the power to fix our lives. Many people will get to believe in God when they see how we witness to his power in life, how we demonstrate our faith in true life situation is an avenue of proclaiming God’s word in the world.
May our faith in God be strong that by our lives we will draw people to his kingdom of love. Amen
Mark the Evangelist, a disciple of St Peter, is believed to be the author of the Gospel of Mark, one of the four canonical gospels of the New Testament. He accompanied Peter and accompanied on his missionary journeys. Mark is considered a saint in many Christian traditions and is the patron saint of notaries, lawyers, and barristers.
