Saint Benedict, Abbot

Saint Benedict, Abbot, is widely recognized as the founder of Western monasticism. Born in Italy in the 5th century, he established the famous Benedictine Order, renowned for its rule of prayer, work, and community life. Saint Benedict’s teachings and monastic practices have had a profound influence on Christian spirituality and the preservation of knowledge throughout the ages, leaving an enduring legacy of devotion and discipline.

Genesis 32:23-33, Matthew 9:32-37

THEME: SOLITUDE

The experience of encountering the divine is closely linked to creating an environment free from distractions. It’s good to spend time with family and friends, but there should be times when we need to get rid of our involvement with them to spend time with God.

Jacob had a special encounter with God after he had sent his household ahead of him and was alone. Having wrestled with God, with a special plea for blessings, the Lord said to him, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have been strong against God, you shall prevail against men.”

St benedict as a founder of Western monasticism, was a great man who cherished solitude as a path to encounter the divine.

The value of solitude is invaluable. May God eliminate all distractions that hinder our deep connection with Him. May we find perfect communion with Him. Amen.
