HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY IN THE 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Saint Joachim and Saint Anne  are the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Their faithfulness and devotion set an example for future generations. Joachim and Anne’s unwavering love, coupled with divine intervention, granted them the blessing of conceiving Mary, who would later become the mother of Jesus Christ, embodying grace and purity.

Exodus 16:1-5,9-15, Matthew 13:1-9

THEME: SERVING GOD ON EMPTY STOMACH

Poverty can be likened to a malevolent force. In lack, we hardly know who a true worshipper is. It takes great faith to serve God on an empty stomach. Our level of faith can truly be tested when our basic needs are met. True worshipers are individuals who, despite their financial independence, continue to make room for God in their lives.

The Israelites could no longer stand their hunger in the wilderness, so they began to complain to Moses. They would prefer to return to Egypt, the land of slavery than continuing their journey to the promised land where God wanted them to come that they may worship him. Even when God gave them food from heaven, he made sure that it would only serve them for the day to test their reliance on him.

We may not know what tomorrow holds, but if we know the Lord who holds tomorrow, he will make straight our path, and provide all that we need.

Joachim and Anne remained devoted and waited patiently for years before God blessed them with the Blessed Virgin,  who today, we venerate as the Mother of the Saviour.

May no momentary challenges quench our reliance on God. may all chains of slavery in our lives be broken. Amen
