SCALE OF PREFERENCE: A KEY TO EFFICIENCY, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

85

HOMILY OF SATURDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK OF EASTER.

Acts 6:1-7, John 6:16-21

THEME: SCALE OF PREFERENCE: A KEY TO EFFICIENCY

QUOTE: Excellence is doing ordinary things in an extraordinary way. We are excellent when we stand out in what we do.

In today’s first reading, we could see that when their workload began to increase, the apostles called a group of the disciples and worked out the selection of deacons and delegated special duties to them. This happened, when, “the Hellenists made a complaint against the Hebrews: in the daily distribution their own widows were being overlooked.”

They needed excellence in their ministry. They didn’t just want to be good at everything without being an authority in at least one thing. They said,

“It would not be right for us to neglect the word of God so as to give out food; you, brothers, must select from among yourselves seven men of good reputation, filled with the Spirit and with wisdom; we will hand over this duty to them, and continue to devote ourselves to prayer and to the service of the word.”

In the church, both the laity and the clergy have a responsibility to a ministry of working together.

In every field of life, effective planning is important. If we do not choose our priority or have a scale of preference, we may easily break down. Most of those who encourage us to go beyond our limits, do so because they are beneficiaries of what we do. If we break down, they will quickly look elsewhere for what they want. And if we lose ourselves while enjoying praises from those who want us to work nonstop, we may not know the time we exhaust ourselves beyond our capability.

May the Lord sharpen our sense of judgement so we can set our priority right.
