HOMILY OF TUESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN LENT
Ezekiel 47:1-9,12, John 5:1-3,5-16
THEME: OUR CALL AS HEALERS
The vision of Ezekiel in today’s reading shows the kind of blessing that flows from God to all who follow his path. In his presence, there is fullness of joy and redemption, that is why a true Christian can never be toxic in his or her relationship. Having tapped the divine healing balm from God, who is the ocean of our blessings, we go out to heal the world around us.
“Wherever the river flows, all living creatures teeming in it will live. Fish will be very plentiful, for wherever the water goes it brings health, and life teems wherever the river flows. Along the river, on either bank, will grow every kind of fruit tree with leaves that never wither and fruit that never fails; they will bear new fruit every month, because this water comes from the sanctuary. And their fruit will be good to eat and the leaves medicinal.’
This river as described by Ezekiel flows from the temple’s threshold. It is the river that gives life to whatever that comes in contact with it. Having approached the temple of God, and having drunk from his cup of blessings, our lives must be signs of hope for others. No child of God is expected to wear gloomy faces or be an agent of oppression. We are meant to be devoted to making life better for others.
At the pool of Bethzatha, Jesus showed this healing power when he healed the man who had been sick for thirty eight years. It does not matter how long it takes our blessings to manifest; it is all about the power of God to save. This man relied on the help of man to dip him into the river whenever the water was moved by the angel. Unfortunately, no one came to help him for good thirty-eight years, until the Lord came to his rescue, Jesus proved to be his main source of healing. He once referred to his body as the temple, when he said, “destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” John 2:19-20. As members of Christ’s household who partake in his life every day, we are called to reach out to those who have lost hope in the world; those who find it difficult to find meaning in their life.
May our share in the life of Christ continue to give life to all our actions that they may be directed towards raising those who are bowed down in life. Amen.
