HOMILY OF SUNDAY OF THE 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

2 Kings 4:8-11,13-16, Romans 6:3-4,8-11, Matthew 10:37-42

THEME: IN GOD’S NAME

Those who are sent for any mission can never be abandoned, for as long as they faithfully embody the sender’s purpose, they will continuously receive the support and backing they need.

Jesus said in today’s Gospel, “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me.”

We learn from the second reading that we all partake in the life of Christ by the virtue of our baptism. Hence, we are called to bear witness to him by our lives.

As messengers of the gospel, we are expected to put God first in our missions. By that, He takes charge of whatever we do. He leads the way, ensuring provision in moments of hardship, regardless of the challenges we may encounter.

Likewise, the one who welcomes a messenger of God solely because of their divine mission will reap the rewards thereof. “If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.”

We read from the first reading how the Shunammite woman approached her husband, seeking his consent, and wholeheartedly prepared a dedicated chamber within their home for the revered Elisha, recognizing him as a true man of God. Her selfless actions and reverence resulted in a remarkable promise: despite her advanced age, she would be blessed with the gift of a son.

We are summoned to remain faithful to our Christian vocation, called to extend our unwavering support and deep respect to those who embody God’s presence and serve as His representatives among humanity.

May all we do in God’s name bring us abundance of his blessings. Amen.
