HOMILY OF MONDAY OF THE 28TH WEEK IN ORDIANRY TIME

Romans 1:1-7, Luke 11:29-32

THEME: HUMAN SEARCH FOR MEANING

In human search for meaning, it is significant to pray for the spirit of discernment. This helps us to recognize the truth which leads to salvation. Unfortunately, the world loves something that is sensational. That was why at the temptation of Jesus, Satan wanted to trick him into jumping from the pinnacle of the temple to win the admiration of the people. We live in a world where unusual things easily gain attention. Good or bad, people often tend to embrace whatever is strange. This explains why the crowd demands signs from Jesus to prove that he was the Messiah.

“The crowds got even bigger, and Jesus addressed them: ‘This is a wicked generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.”

The sign of Jonah

The sign of Jonah comes with a call to repentance. However, we must change our orientation and seek after the truth that saves rather than searching for spectacular experiences. knowing Jesus surpasses all worldly pursuits. He is the truth. It is a special privilege to be in his company.

Human quest to know and search for meaning.

The Lord said,

“On Judgement Day the Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.”

The queen of Sheba was driven by her search for meaning that she traversed a long distance to listen to Solomon. That is something commendable. The quest to know helps us to get rid of ignorance. It is too expensive to maintain ignorance. However, our curiosity should gear towards knowing Jesus as the ultimate in our search for meaning.

May our inner eyes be open that we may not need further proof, having seen in Jesus the fulfilment of our ultimate desires. Amen.
