True Greatness in Service

1Peter 1:18-25, Mark 10:32-45

Fr. Felix Olatunji Yayi, C.S.Sp.

Dear friends, I welcome you to this Wednesday’s reflection with the Spiritans Sound. Today, we reflect on the factors of greatness.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a different understanding of greatness. The world often measures greatness by power, influence, wealth, status, and how many people serve us. But Jesus turns this idea upside down. He says, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Mk 10:43).

True greatness in the Christian life is found in humble service. Jesus Himself is our perfect example. Though He is Lord and Master, He came not to be served but to serve and to give His life for others. Service, therefore, is not weakness; it is strength expressed through love and sacrifice.

We are called to ask ourselves: How do I serve? Do I seek recognition, or do I serve selflessly? Greatness before God is not found in titles or positions, but in a heart willing to help, listen, sacrifice, and uplift others.

As followers of Christ, may we learn that the path to greatness is the path of service. The more we serve in love, the more we become like Christ.

Peace be with you!
