Unless I go, The Advocate Will Not Come

Acts, 12:22-30, John 16:5-11

Fr. Emmanuel Aghidi CSSp.

Jesus amazes us daily as he exhibits the elder-brotherly-psychological of emotional understanding. He watched his disciples closely. He saw they were already feeling shattered as he told them about his departure. Jesus, the one who understands even the rhythm of the heart beats tells them, “You are sad because I told you I will be leaving? unless I go, the advocate will not come."

Friends, Jesus knows our heavy weakness, the sorrows and burdens we bear. He does not leave us stranded. He comforts us even in the furnace of all round troubles. Jesus is close by.

Paul and Silas experienced the presence and power of the Advocate today in the first reading. We are told that the whole people rose against them. They were alone and left to suffer torture and thrown into prison. But the advocate would not allow them in the prisons of mortals. Though the whole world was against them, they had the greatest Counsellor and Comforter.

Friends, the prison bars of whatever cannot hold us when the Advocate is with us. Let us prepare our hearts as we soon begin the novena to the Holy Spirit. That the Holy Spirit, the Advocate may find a home with us to comfort us and shield us.

May the Lord bless His words in our hearts. Amen.
