The Word as the Seed Ground of The Spirit

Acts 8:5-8, 14-17, 1 Peter 3:15-18, John 14:15-21

It is an established fact that we cannot grow beyond the strength of our minds. A well-informed mind has the capacity to navigate life’s realities with wisdom and clarity. Hence, the need to feed our minds with the best nourishment: the Word of God.

The Word of God makes our hearts fertile for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Lord told His disciples to abide in His word, and He promised to send the Holy Spirit to dwell with them:

“If you love me,” He said, “you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

In the first reading, we see the emphasis placed on the reception of the Holy Spirit when it became clear that the people of Samaria had received the Word:

“Now when the Apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.”

One leads to the other. The Word prepares the heart for the Holy Spirit to dwell within it. We must predispose ourselves for God to come and dwell in us. He does not dwell in a corrupted mind. That is why the Word must first prepare and purify our hearts before the Spirit comes to abide in us. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

Moreover, Paul said in his letter to the Romans:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).

The Word makes this renewal possible.

The Word prepares the heart; the Spirit fills and empowers it. Without the Spirit, the Word can remain mere information. With the Spirit, the Word becomes life and power. As the Lord said:

“The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (John 6:63).

Paul further says:

“No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:3).

Beloved, let us open our minds and hearts to receive the Word of God whenever it is spoken. Let us always yearn to study His Word. He whispers His will to us between the lines of Scripture. He shows us the path through our journey toward eternity.

May our hearts always remain open so that we may hear Him speaking to us. May we be filled with His Spirit all the days of our lives. Amen.
