Guided by the Spirit, Sent as Light
Acts 12:24; John 12:44-50
Fr Felix Olatunji Yayi, C.S.Sp.
Dear friends in Christ, I welcome you to this Wednesday reflection with the Spiritans Sounds.
Today, we joyfully witness the growth of the early Church in the first reading, guided by the Holy Spirit. It gives us a clear understanding of our mission as Christians: to proclaim the Word of God. We are called to live each day conscious that others look up to us, and that their lives can be shaped by the witness of how we live our own.
In the Gospel, Jesus presents Himself as the Light of the world. Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh, as Gospel of John reminds us. This same Jesus—Word of God and Light of the world—is the One we are called to proclaim. We are sent to carry His light to our brothers and sisters who live in darkness and in the shadow of death.
We cannot accomplish this mission on our own unless we are guided by the Holy Spirit, as we see in today’s first reading. The life of Catherine of Siena offers us a powerful example. She was a woman deeply rooted in prayer yet boldly engaged in the affairs of her time—calling people to conversion, reconciling divisions, and radiating the light of Christ in both word and action. Her courage and holiness show us what it means to truly bear the light of Christ to the world.
As we reflect today, we pray through the intercession of St Catherine, that we may become true bearers of the Word and light of God. May we positively influence those around us and remain ever open and obedient to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
Shalom!
