Heavenly Witnessing to the Truth
Acts 5:27-33, Psalm 33:2,9,17-20, Gospel: John 3:31-36
By Fr Jude Emeka Ekeshiri CSSp
There is a disparity between things that are beyond and things that are within our gaze. Some times, things that are beyond look mystical and captures our attention beyond our control.
In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist makes the differences clear, he says, “He who comes from above is above all others and He who is born of the earth is earthly himself, and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven bears witness to the things He has seen and heard, even if His testimony is not accepted. Though all who do accept his testimony are attesting the truthfulness of God, since He whom God has sent speaks God’s own words” (John 3:31-36).
John the Baptist speaks about Jesus’s origin and calls all those who believe in Him to be witnesses to the truth. Jesus, the Son of God, has come down from heaven, sent by the Father. Unlike John the Baptist or any earthly prophet, Jesus speaks with divine authority and brings eternal life.
This passage reminds us that Jesus is not merely a great teacher or moral example. He is the one who reveals who God the Father is and offers us the gift of eternal life that does not end with death but is shared in the presence of God forever.
The Gospel also stresses the importance of faith in Jesus. It tells us that, to reject the Son is to reject the Father who sent Him; to accept Him is to receive eternal life and stand firm in God’s truth. Many times, we live like people who are earthly and does not believe in heaven. We are called to ponder the things of heaven and to be witnesses to the truth.
As we continue our Easter journey, this Gospel calls us to deepen our trust in Christ. It is not enough to admire the teachings of Jesus from afar, but to live it as believers in the truth. Thus, we are invited to believe in Him, to accept His gift of life, and to allow His words to transform our lives completely. We must recognize that true life and truth come only through Him. Peace be with you.
