HOMILY OF THURSDAY IN THE 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Genesis 44:18-21,23-29,45:1-5, Matthew 10:7-15

THEME: FROM PRISON TO THE PALACE

There is a popular Yoruba saying, that goes, “” Adani loro fagbara koni ” meaning a person that inflicts pains on you, has only ended up making you stronger, and resilient. Crying over our spilt milk can stop us from taking the next step of action on our way forward.

The philosophical concept, “The phenomenology of facticity” is about coming to term with our lived experience, our concrete existence. Rather than dwelling on the culprit of an unflushed toilet, we can focus on making it usable and move forward with our lives. This is not a ticket for decadence, but an emphasis on making the most of our day-to-day experience without undue rumination over our pains or failures.

The brothers of Joseph sold him into slavery, but he later became their saviour in time of famine. He said to them when they finally met him, “I am your brother Joseph whom you sold into Egypt. But now, do not grieve, do not reproach yourselves for having sold me here, since God sent me before you to preserve your lives.”

Joseph was made for something bigger than being the bread winner of his family. He has a mission to save nations. The higher the mission, the greater the challenges. Joseph had series of challenges, but through them, God took him to his life mission.

May God give us a clear vision of our life mission even amid our challenges. Amen.
