Embracing Our Christian Identity

By Rev fr. Adole Achilleus Ile Lampez CSSP

Homily of Friday of the 25th week in Ordinary Time Year B 27th of September 2024
1st reading : Ecclesiastes 3:1-11
Psalm 143:1-4
Gospel : Luke 9:18-22

In today’s gospel, Jesus asked his disciples a pertinent question of his identity as perceived by the people.

The answer to the question of Jesus does not really depict his identity. For some called him Elijah, some called him John the Baptist, and others referred to him as one of the prophets.

It is important to note that, even though the people could not fully comprehend Jesus’ identity and mission, they associated Him with positivity (i.e., John the Baptist, Elijah, and the prophets)

This brings us to the question of our own identity as Christians, as a need for self-examination is indispensable for growth.

Who do people say you are?
Are you associated with positivity or negativity?

In our Christian living, we must attune ourselves to what is positive and inspirational to others, that they may see and believe in the one we are imitating, i.e., Christ. In other words, our lives should draw people closer to Christ and not chase them away from Christ.

Peace be with you 🙏🏾🙌🏾
