HOMILY OF FRIDAY IN THE 18TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Saint Clare, Virgin

St. Clare of Assisi (1194-1253) was a devout Italian saint and the founder of the Poor Clares, a Franciscan religious order for women. Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, she embraced a life of poverty, prayer, and service to the poor. Her profound dedication to God and her compassionate spirit left a lasting legacy, making her a revered figure in the Church.

Deuteronomy 4:32-40, Matthew 16:24-28

THEME: DIVIDEND OF A CONTINUOUS WALK WITH GOD

As we journey alongside God, our understanding of Him expands, revealing new dimensions of His nature to us. The closer we draw to Him, the deeper our insights become, as unveils the richness of His character and the wonders of His ways. This ongoing revelation nurtures a profound and transformative relationship, inviting us to continually explore the boundless depths of His love and wisdom.

In the first reading, Moses took the people of Israel through a memory lane. He told them to ask the ages past whether God did in their midst what he is doing now in their generation. This was to show that they are more privileged.

Moreover, every new experience of God in our lives must call us to humility and service. It is a special invitation for surrender.

Jesus, in the gospel bid us to follow him completely. We must not allow the lures of the world to hold us back.  He said, “What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life?” Following Jesus comes with its own thorns, but the life he gives cannot be compared to the gains of the world.

Just as St Clare voluntarily embraced a life of poverty, prayer, and service to the poor, may we equally submit ourselves to God that he may reach out to his people through us.
