HOMILY OF THE WEDNESDAY OF THE 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A: St Francis of Assisi: St. Francis of Assisi, an agent of reformation, was born in the 12th century, is renowned for his deep spirituality and love for all creation. He founded the Franciscan Order, emphasizing simplicity, poverty, and devotion to God. His life of humility, kindness, and care for nature earned him the title of the patron saint of animals and the environment. St. Francis’ legacy continues to inspire acts of compassion and reverence for the natural world.

Nehemiah 2:1-8, Luke 9:57-62.

THEME: BEING AN AGENT REFORMATION

Today we celebrate the memorial of St Francis of Assisi, a strong man of faith who followed the prompting of the Lord and worked strenuously for the reformation of the church. Filled with fervor akin to Nehemiah in today’s first reading, he abandoned his inheritance and profession to restore a church tainted by materialism and superficial spirituality. He totally submitted himself to God’s service.

Francis of Assisi left the royalty of his rich family and became a beggar in the street to sustain a community of brothers which he formed, those who would work with him to make a different in the world.

However, we live in a world where decadence rocks the polity and truth is often trampled underfoot. Like Nehemiah and St Francis of Assisi, we are called to play our part to be agents of reformation by showing good examples and work to serve the needs of others.

Moreover, Nehemiah collaborated with King Artaxerxes, to rebuild the temple, St Francis worked with the church authority to reform the church. We are called to be part of the political system as we work in the church to take the gospel of Christ beyond frontiers.

May God make us shining lights wherever we find ourselves. Amen.
