Spiritans Sound Outreach: Unveiling Des Places’ Legacy

By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

It seems to me that this is what God is asking of me.” These words of Claude Poullart des Places, were spoken in response to the invitation of Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort who invited him to join him in parish missions in western France. His words echo with a quiet but powerful clarity. They reveal a heart not driven by personal preference, but by discernment, compassion, and a deep sensitivity to God’s call.

“He said, “I feel no attraction to the missions, but I know too well the good that can be done there not to contribute all my strength and commit myself inviolably to them with you. You know that for some time now I have been distributing everything at my disposal to help poor schoolchildren continue their studies. I know several who have admirable aptitudes but who, for lack of support cannot make use of them and are forced to bury talents that would be very useful to the church if they were cultivated. This is what I would like to do by bringing them together in one house. It seems to me that this is what God is asking of me, and I have been confirmed in this thought by enlightened people, one of whom has given me hope of helping me to provide for their subsistence. If God grants me the grace to succeed, you can count on missionaries. I will prepare them for you and you will put them to work. In this way, you will be satisfied and so will I.” [Spiritan Anthology, page 43]

Des Places admitted he felt no particular attraction to the missions themselves. Yet, he recognized something greater-the immense good that could be done through them. His response was not to step away, but to contribute in the way he believed God had uniquely prepared him. He turned his attention to young people. These are gifted, promising youths who are limited by lack of opportunity. He saw talents buried not out of laziness, but out of poverty and neglect. And he resolved to change that.

This vision remains strikingly relevant today. In a world filled with young creators bursting with potential-musicians, writers, digital storytellers, and innovators-many still lack the guidance, platform, and support needed to thrive. This is where Spiritans Sound Outreach steps in, continuing the living legacy of Des Places. It is not merely a project; it is a mission-a deliberate effort to discover, nurture, and unveil the hidden treasures within the youth.

Moreover, through mentorship, formation, and creative opportunities, Spiritans Sound Outreach walks with young people, helping them refine their gifts and align them with purpose. It is a space where talent meets direction, and passion finds expression for the service of God and humanity. In doing so, it prepares a new generation of voices-missionaries not only of the pulpit, but of culture, creativity, and influence.

Yet, this mission cannot stand alone. Just as Des Places relied on the goodwill of others to sustain his vision, Spiritans Sound Outreach calls on well-meaning individuals, partners, and benefactors to lend their support. Your encouragement, resources, and collaboration can help prevent countless talents from being lost.

Perhaps, like Des Places, this too is something God is asking of us-to recognize, support, and invest in the future, one gifted young life at a time.
