Spiritan Scholastics in Southwest Nigeria Convene for Discernment
By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp
The Spiritan Scholastics of the Province of Nigeria Southwest have just concluded their annual Easter Reunion, held at the Holy Ghost House, Des Places Community, Benin City, Edo State. The gathering began on April 6 and came to a close on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
More than a meeting, the reunion is a vibrant moment of grace-a time when priests-to-be come together as brothers to share life, faith, and mission. Though each scholastic has received a personal call, their shared identity in Christ and in the Spiritan charism draws them into a deeper communion. This fraternal bond continues to shape their vision, strengthen their purpose, and renew their commitment to the mission of the Congregation.
Accompanied by formators, spiritual directors, and counsellors, the reunion created space for sincere reflection and common discernment. Together, they revisited their apostolic work experiences-celebrating victories, confronting challenges, and seeking clarity for the journey ahead. It was a moment not only of evaluation, but also of encouragement and renewed zeal.
However, the vitality of any mission depends greatly on the quality and formation of its missionaries. Recognising this, it is imperative that close accompaniment must always be intentional to ensure that each young confrere is guided, supported, and formed holistically. While embracing the richness of community life, each scholastic is also helped to discern his unique calling- what he brings to the common table to enrich the shared mission and breathe life into the Spiritan charism.
Within the Province, formation is sustained through a dedicated team: Fr Andrew Edogbo serves as Councillor in charge of Formation; Fr Alo Joseph CSSp guides the Postulants as Director; and Fr John Mammah, CSSp, coordinates vocation promotion and recruitment. Working collaboratively with the Provincial Superior and other committed confreres, they continue to nurture vocations and accompany young men responding generously to God’s call.
The Easter Reunion stands as a powerful reminder that the journey of formation is never walked alone-it is a shared pilgrimage of faith, brotherhood, and mission.
