APPRECIATING THE PAIN OF MOTHERHOOD, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

24

HOMILY OF FRIDAY IN THE 23RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Our Lady of Sorrows

1 Timothy 1:1-2,12-14, John 19:25-27

THEME: APPRECIATING THE PAIN OF MOTHERHOOD

The pain of motherhood begins with the pangs of birth and the rigor of child upbringing.

The case of Mary culminated in the death of her child, after the sorrows she has endured from her conception which almost brought about serious complication in her marital life, and all the backlashes she suffered in connection to Jesus’ ministry. She was with the Lord at the foot of the cross till the point where the Lord Jesus handed her over to John, the beloved disciple.

Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.”

All our mothers are encouraged to model their lives after Mary. She never deserted her Son because she knew his purpose in the world. Our mothers must not give up on their children no matter the pain they suffer in their upbringing.

More so, as grateful children, no matter what we may pass through in life, let us remember to care for our parents. Despite the pain the Lord Jesus suffered on the Cross, he did not overlook the sorrow of the mother. He had to keep her under the care of John. This gives us an inkling to how much care he showed her while they lived together.

May the Lord continue to strengthen all our mothers. May we also learn how to care for them. Amen.
