THE LOVE OF A MOTHER, By Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY IN THE 18TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Numbers 13:1-2,25-14:1,26-29,34-35, Matthew 15:21-28

THEME: THE LOVE OF A MOTHER

Every woman worthy of the name is expected to have deep love for her children. The uncommon love of the gentile woman in todays’ gospel invoked the compassion of Jesus. Even though, she didn’t recognize him as the Lord, she believed that he could deliver the daughter. She said, “Sir, Son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.”

Jesus was not in the territory to evangelize, yet he was delighted to have found such faith. He crossed over to the region of Tyre and Sidon to have a final private moment with his disciples, away from the Jewish threat. To get rid of her supposed distractions, the disciples said to him, “Give her what she wants”. Though Jesus put her faith to test, she could take any form of insult in so far her daughter gets well again.

Every grateful child is expected to pay tribute for his or her mother. They pass through a lot of hardships to make sure we are fine. Mary the mother of Jesus was another typical example, who stood with her child till the end.

May the Lord bless all mothers that they may continue to perform their heroic duties in the world. Amen
