Texts: 2 Maccabees 6:18-31, Luke 19:1–10

Friends in Christ, today’s readings place before us two very different, yet deeply connected examples of faith.
Eleazar, in the first reading, chooses faithfulness over compromise. Even in old age, he refuses to abandon what he knows is right. His courage reminds us that our choices even the hidden ones shape our witness and can strengthen the faith of others.

In the Gospel, Zacchaeus shows us the other side of the spiritual journey: the courage to change. He climbs a tree just to see Jesus, and that small act of desire opens the door to a complete transformation. When Jesus calls his name, Zacchaeus responds with generosity and repentance. To come down is to repent from hanging on the mountains of Sin; oppression, extortion and unforgiveness.

Both men teach us something essential; Faith sometimes calls us to stand firm, even when it’s difficult. And at other times, faith calls us to turn back, to open our hearts, and to begin again. God meets us in both moments, strengthening us when we need courage, and embracing us when we seek mercy.

And like Zacchaeus, when we welcome Jesus into our lives, salvation enters our home and our hearts.
May we like Zacchaeus see Jesus. May the Lord bless His words in our hearts. Amen.
