People are unique, and in our interactions, it is wise to ask them what they truly desire rather than making assumptions. It is not always thoughtful to simply follow trends and get our friends gifts we consider special or surprising. We may later find that those gifts are untouched for years.
I have seen many wealthy children who remain unhappy despite receiving expensive presents from their parents. Their fathers, hoping to bring them joy, buy costly gifts, unaware that what these children truly long for is not material things but their presence. They crave time—conversations, play, stories, and warm embraces.
In today’s reading, God addresses the people of Israel, who believed they could impress him with sacrifices. However, he makes it clear that what he truly desires is mercy and love. They assumed he was like the other gods, but God’s heart seeks something deeper.
Personally, I love working and helping people, so I prefer dressing simply to allow me the freedom to serve. However, some assume I lack elegant clothing and continuously buy them for me. While I appreciate the gesture, I would rather that money be used to help the poor, those suffering from hunger, preventable diseases like malaria, and abandoned children struggling to survive on unsafe streets. That, I believe, would make a greater impact in a country where many are in dire need.
I pray that God opens our eyes to truly understand his will and what he desires from us in this world. This is my humble prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.
